General behavior rules
The leash and muzzle must always be available for use when needed.
Near pastures, it is especially important to keep the dog on a leash, particularly if there are cows nearby that might get startled.
While hiking, pay attention to signs that say "Dogs on a leash" – they protect livestock from dangerous contamination. If there is no restriction and no risk, the dog may roam freely.
Very important: The leash must not be longer than 1.5 meters. Violations are subject to a fine
Local transport
You are allowed to take your dog on all public transport, as long as there is enough space available. Large and medium-sized dogs may only travel with a valid "single ticket" fare. A leash and muzzle are mandatory.
Guide dogs and small dogs may ride for free and without a muzzle.
Dogs are allowed on cable cars. Information on muzzle requirements is included in the regulations. Some cable cars offer discounted or free transport.
In public places
According to the Animal Welfare Act and the implementing regulations, dogs must be kept on a leash in public places. Large dogs must wear a muzzle if they are not on a leash, while small dogs do not have to.
Exempt from the leash and muzzle requirement are service dogs such as herding dogs, avalanche dogs, rescue dogs, hunting dogs, guide dogs for the blind, and other assistance dogs.
With the dog in the restaurant
While hiking with your dog, take a break in an alpine hut or visit rustic inns together with your four-legged friend, where hosts are accustomed to the presence of animals.
Since there are no general regulations for restaurants, accommodations, and shops in South Tyrol, we recommend checking locally in advance.
Traveling
Your dog needs the following requirements to enter Italy:
• EU pet passport
• Microchip identification
• Valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days old)
• Puppies can only enter from 15 weeks of age
To the veterinarian
If your four-legged friend experiences a health issue during your vacation with a dog in South Tyrol, it’s best to visit a veterinary clinic.
